In its 68th edition, the festival is showcasing Latin American productions from Argentina, Brazil and Colombia in its youth competition. The animated feature film Virus Tropical by Santiago Caicedo is based on the graphic novel by Powerpaola, a Colombian-Ecuadorian comic artist who autobiographically relates the events of her childhood and adolescence that took place between Quito and Cali. The film portrays her struggle for independence within the constraints of an environment full of stereotypes and a bias towards appearances, the story of a Latin American woman that does not respond to received categories and learns the ropes of life as she goes. With a feminine vision of the world, this girl witnesses a series of small crises that shape her personality. The film’s world premiere took place at the first edition of the Animation is Film festival in Los Angeles and will soon be presented at the Cartagena Film Festival in Colombia and SXSW—South by Southwest in Austin, Texas.

The short film Yover by Edison Sánchez participates in Generation’s Kplus category. It tells the story of a twelve-year-old boy obliged by his circumstances to work. Every day he travels on his bicycle trolley along the streets of the new Bojayá—a town that survived the bloodiest massacre in the Colombian war—and keeps himself vibrant by stealing minutes of fantasy from reality and by relishing moments spent in child’s play. Yover embodies the forgiveness of a past that is revealed through him and the faith to move forward towards a future of simple rewards. The film is a story of child labor, play, and friendship.

"The intention behind this film is to provide a different perspective on Bojayá than that supplied by the traditional media, which harken back to the past to provoke a visceral sadness and thus tell a single standard story, without nuance, about the community. Yover reflects this new configuration where friendship and community life prevail above all else. There in the jungle, we discover a powerful message for an increasingly convulsed and divided planet," says the director.

Generation reached its forty-first edition within the Berlinale, presenting 65 films from 39 countries, including feature films and short films in various categories. The winners in this section are chosen by eleven children and seven adolescents who are in charge of granting the Crystal Bears, the program’s official statuette. Two additional Grand Jury Prizes are awarded by international juries
