South by Southwest (SXSW) is a festival that since 1987 takes place every year in Austin, Texas in the month of March. The festival consists of several events and conferences that revolve around films, interactive media, and music. It primarily seeks to encourage and promote professional and creative growth as well as prove that the best and most unexpected discoveries occur when diverse topics and people come together.

Virus Tropical, a Colombian film directed by Santiago Caicedo, is part of the festival’s 2018 selection in the Global Category, in which international film talent with innovative narratives is selected. Virus Tropical is an animated feature about a girl slowly growing up and dealing with the reality of her "normal" family. This family, like most, is full of nuances and attempts to mold her into someone she may not want to be. It is the film adaptation of the homonymous graphic novel by Colombian-Ecuadorian artist Paola "Powerpaola" Gaviria about a young woman who fights for her independence in an environment full of stereotypes and a bias towards appearances, the story of a Latin American woman that does not respond to received categories and learns the ropes of life as she goes. With a feminine vision of the world, this girl witnesses a series of small crises that shape her personality.

Santiago Caicedo is a Colombian filmmaker that has made his mark exploration animation. He has won recognition for short films such as Come Coco, Moving Still, Uyuyui, Galaxy, and now Virus Tropical. Besides being featured at SXSW, Virus Tropical had its world premiere in the Official Competition of the first edition of Animation is Film (a Los Angeles festival held October 20-22) and will be present at the Cartagena Film Festival (FICCI) in 58th edition in the Colombian Cinema competition as well as Berlinale 2018 in the Generation section, the only Colombian feature film to be competing at the festival.

The SXSW Documentary Spotlight category is also set to host the world premiere of Nossa Chape, a Colombian film co-produced with Brazil and the United States. This documentary traces the reconstruction of the Chapecoense soccer club in Brazil after an airplane carrying the team crashed on November 28, 2016, leaving all but three of the players dead.

Nossa Chape was written and directed by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist, brothers born in Massachusetts, known for working in films such as Favela Rising, The Two Escobars, Youngstown, and Boyhood, among others. Nossa Chape is an All Rise Films production.
