In Virus tropical, Paola was born into a traditional Colombian family—or at least that is the impression they would like to give. Her father is a former priest, her mother is a clairvoyant and her sisters are not exactly what their parents had hoped for. This is the life story of a young Latin American woman struggling for independence in a restrictive environment filled with stereotypes and pressure to keep up appearances. She adheres to no norms and learns to live by doing. With a particular sort of feminine perspective on the world, she bears witness to a series of small crises that come to mold her personality.

The film is based on the graphic novel by Colombian-Ecuadorian cartoonist Paola Gaviria, better known as Powerpaola. In it she gives an autobiographical account of the events of her childhood and adolescence in the cities of Quito and Cali.

This Colombian production is one of ten included in the Feature Film Official Selection at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, where it will go up against films from countries including Belgium, France, Canada, Japan, Brazil, the United States and Italy.
