The most recent production by Alejandro Landes—known for directing Cocalero (2007), a documentary about Evo Morales, and Porfirio (2012)—premiered in Colombia on August 15, after a major tour of major festivals including the Sundance Film Festival, the sixty-ninth Berlin International Film Festival, and the Latin Horizons section of the San Sebastian Film Festival (Spain).

After appearing at US festivals in Wisconsin, San Francisco, Newport Beach, Seattle, and at the Chicago Critics Film Festival, Monos premiered on September 13 in US commercial theaters, beginning with New York and Los Angeles. It has since hit screens in San Francisco, Miami, Chicago, Austin, Atlanta, Raleigh, Houston, Nashville, San Antonio, Washington, Baltimore, Dallas, Philadelphia, Fort Worth, Brooklyn, Oklahoma City, Cambridge, Chicago, Addison, Sturtevant, Oak Creek, Madison, Albuquerque, Minneapolis, Denver, Scottsdale, Palm Desert, San Diego, Irvine, Long Beach, Pasadena, Hollywood, North Hollywood, Santa Monica, Palo Alto, Berkeley, San Rafael, and Seattle.

Participant Media, the film production company in charge of US distribution of the multi-award winning Roma (2018), joined NEON and included Monos in its US distribution portfolio, the broadest distribution a Colombian film has ever enjoyed in the United States.

Across the Atlantic, after its screening at the London Film Festival on October 4, Monos will premiere in UK commercials on October 25. This is the latest premiere in a commercial release that includes Argentina, Hungary, Sweden, Norway, and France in the coming months, for a film that has already been shown in theatres in the Netherlands and Italy. In Colombia, within two weeks of screening, it had been seen by 105,000 people. Monos has already notched over 260,000 viewers.

Monos was produced with a grant from the Colombian Film (FDC). Already it has garnered acclaim at film festivals: the Audience Award at the fifty-ninth Cartagena Film Festival (FICCI); Best Original Music at the twenty-first BAFICI (Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival); the Special Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival; CCAS Fiction Award at Cinélatino Rencontres de Toulouse; Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress at Newport Beach Festival; Best Fiction Feature Film at Montclair Film Festival; Transilvania Trophy (Best Film) at the Transilvania International Film Festival; Blue Angel Award (Best Film) at the Slovakia Art Film Fest; and Best Director at the Odessa International Film Festival.
