5. Special Bulletin – 2013 Distribution Summary

This report is a summary of film distribution in Colombia including an overview of activity during the last four years and a detailed analysis of 2013 figures featuring box office revenue totaling 352 billion pesos (175 million USD) and attendance figures totaling 43.2 million viewers.

The statistics are based on a total of 19 distributors, including three Hollywood studios accountable for 80% of the box office and 79% of attendance. Cine Colombia, for example, represents Warner and Fox and also distributes national and international independent films. Cinecolor, who initially entered the Colombian market as a film laboratory group owned by Chile Films, went on to represent Kodak, and became a distributor for Disney, also has a significant market share, as can be seen below. UIP represents Columbia Tristar Distributor, Universal and Paramount.

An analysis of the performance of independent distributors for the past four years shows that Cine Colombia is the leader in film distribution with 46.7% of the titles, followed by Cineplex with 22.4%, Babilla Cine with 12.1%, and a 4-5% share divided among Procinal, VO Cinemas and Venus Films. United International Pictures is responsible for a mere 1.1% and together the remaining three distributors account for a 1% share.

Between 2010 and 2013, six companies distributed a total of 95 Colombian films, with Cine Colombia distributing almost 57%, and companies grouped under the "Other" category in this study distributed an additional two films.

As elsewhere in the world, the majority of the 244 films distributed in Colombia in 2013 were U.S. and Canadian releases (65.5%). European and Latin America films (including Colombia) accounted for 21.3% and 10.7%, respectively.

A detailed summary follows that includes the number of films shown and released according to distributor, origin of film and percentage of market share plus performance of Colombian films.

  • Cineplex, with 143 films, is the second largest distributor.
