Bullerengue hit theaters

The documentary directed by Alejandro Nieto premiered on November 13. Bullerengue is an Afro-descendant rhythm that originated in the palenques of the Colombian Caribbean as a response to the silencing imposed by slavery. It is transmitted through oral tradition, performed mainly by older women and accompanied by traditional drums. Although its practice was marginalized and virtually undocumented for more than a century, in the last four decades it has evolved from an invisible cultural expression to a symbol of national identity and a cultural export product.

Presence at Conecta 2025

The tenth edition of the Conecta International Documentary Industry Meeting will take place from December 9 to 12 in Chile, with four projects featuring Colombian participation: Apenas fique em silêncio, Marithea, Reina del pueblo, and Buscando a Bariş.

First stage of BAM 2026 calls for proposals now open

The first phase of registration for BAM17 will be open until January 8, 2026. This edition features a new organization into three groups: BAM Projects, BAM Lab, and BAM Talents. In addition, the Documentary Films category has been added, which includes a special award in partnership with EURODOC.

  • Colombian presence at San Sebastián

    The 73rd edition of the San Sebastián International Film Festival took place from September 19 to 27, marking a historic milestone for Colombia. Un poeta (A Poet) , directed by Simón Mesa Soto, won the Horizontes Make & Mark Award, the first time a Colombian film has received this honor. Meanwhile, in the WIP Latam section, the project A la hora de poner la mesa ya no éramos cinco (We Were No Longer Five) won the Egeda Platino Industry Award in its category. Colombian participation also included La lucha (Dance of the Living) in the New Directors section, and Llueve sobre babel (Rains Over Babel) , which competed for the Sebastiane Latino Award. Cinematographer Angello Faccini took part in Horizontes Latinos with La misteriosa mirada del flamenco (The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo) . In addition, two projects - Elogio del crimen (Praise for Crime) and Hijas del agua (Daughters of the Water) — were presented in the Europe–Latin America Co-Production Forum. The Colombian delegation included five talents and representatives from 19 companies, including production houses and film festivals. Proimágenes Colombia was represented by its director, Claudia Triana, and deputy director of Promotion, Katalina Tobón.

At the 34th Biarritz Latin America Festival, the Colombian lineup included the feature films Un poeta (A Poet), Hijo de tigre y mula (Son of Tiger and Mule), Culebra negra (Black Snake), and Horizonte (Horizon), along with the short films Lanawaru and Un día de mayo (A Day in May). Ubeimar Ríos, lead actor in Un poeta, received an award for his performance.

In the industry section of the 58th Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, Colombia is represented with two projects: one in Sitges FanPitch and another in Sitges Coming Soon. Both projects received support and guidance from the International Promotion office of Proimágenes Colombia to reach this event.

Milisuthando hit theaters

The documentary, directed by South African artist Milisuthando Bongela, premiered in theaters across the country on November 6. Co-produced with Viso Producciones (Colombia), it is an intimate story that offers an exercise in memory about love, intimacy, and belonging.

First appearance at Ventana Sur

Colombia will have a prominent presence at Ventana Sur 2025, which will take place in Argentina from December 1 to 5. So far, various projects have been confirmed for sections such as VS Animation!, Ventana Sur Docs, FANTASTIC! LAB, and Ventana Sur Scripts. This year, a Colombian delegation will represent the country, sharing the talent, creativity, and strength of Colombian cinema.

Winners of the 13th Macondo Awards

Once again, the Colombian Film Academy held the Macondo Awards to recognize excellence in filmmaking, artistry, technique, and storytelling in Colombian cinema. The ceremony took place at the Teatro Metropolitano in Medellín on Sunday, November 2. The most awarded films of the night were Estimados señores, with nine statuettes, and La salsa vive, with three. And for the first time, the Macondo Sustainable Award was presented, which was won by Uno, entre el oro y la muerte.

Netflix and Annapurna explore locations in Colombia

From October 20 to 25, the Colombian Film Commission organized a new familiarization trip that brought together representatives from renowned international studios such as Netflix and independent production companies Annapurna Pictures and Ari Gold Films, who toured Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena in search of locations, partners, and production opportunities.
