CONTRACORRIENTE

Synopsis

The very religious inhabitants of Cabo Blanco, a Peruvian fishing village, have a tradition: when someone dies, the closest male is to claim the body, carry out funeral rites, and cast the body into the sea –lest the soul should wander restlessly-. Miguel is a handsome and popular fisherman confused and divided between his love for his wife Mariela, who is pregnant with his son, and his secret affair with Santiago –a hermit painter who moved to the town a year earlier-. When Santiago accidentally drowns, he returns as a spirit and asks Miguel to find his dead body and to bury him according to tradition. Despite the missing body, Miguel is able to touch and feel him as if he were alive –and ideal situation to continue the affair-. Mariela finds a book with a romantic dedication written by Santiago. She confronts Miguel who confesses his affair and promises to change. Miguel asks Santiago to leave him alone and returns to a normal family life… but not for long: when Santiago’s body is eventually found, Miguel finds himself at a crossroads: if he claims the body, it will be the end of his marriage and his reputation; if he doesn’t, his lover is sentenced to wander around forever.
