Synopsis

The film depicts the conversation between San Martín and Bolívar in the city of Guayaquil, and attempts to unravel what these two great Latin American heroes talked about there. By highlighting these men’s ideas, America’s Affaire examines our history as a continent, at the same time making us reflect on the reasons why Latin America was displaced by powerful imperial nations.   While the two Patriots talk to each other, we reconstruct the paths that they both traveled to reach that important meeting. Through flashbacks, we see episodes from the major battles in which they played a key role; everyday scenes from various battalions; intrigues and conspiracies by royalists and criollos; the two soldiers’ journeys across Latin America; their affairs with important women of the era; and, primarily, the political debates led by our founding fathers.   In the conversation that brings them together for the first time in 1822, they are in very different positions from what we see during the story: a tired San Martín, without strength or support, and Bolívar at the height of his popularity. They will study one other, support one other, and respect one other in a negotiation that will show us the philosophical and political background to this shared dream called Patria Grande, or Great Homeland.
