Maria Neyla Santamaria

Maria Neyla Santamaria Bernal was born in Bogota, Colombia. Producer and filmmaker with more than 20 years of experience and with a long history in documentary production. In 2007 she created the company Milagros Producciones, dedicated to the production of film and independent documentary where its work has established a strong link in co-productions between Colombia and Central America.
 
She is a graphic designer and professional photographer graduated from Centro de Diseño Taller 5 in Bogota. She began his film career co-directing the short film Salazar y Torres fueron los culpables, experimental 16mm animation filmed that was part of the 1995 Bogota Film Festival, obtaining a Mention of Honor. She held a film photography workshop at EICTV in Cuba with teachers Jan Le Masson, Julio Valdez, Libio Delgado, and Daniel Portela. He was assistant director of the documentary series Talentos of the disappeared Audiovisuales, produced by Alberto Amaya and directed by Heriberto Fiorillo, and Alvaro García.
 
In 1997 she was the winner of Colcultura's New Talents for TV calls with the 5-chapter documentary series El espíritu de las fundaciones and from there began her career as executive producer and filmmaker of several documentaries.
 
In the field of production, in 2006 she produced the documentary Tule Kuna – cantamos para no morir of German Piffano, DocTV award for Colombia and beneficiary of the FDC. Her first fictional feature film was as an associate producer of Paola Mendoza and Gloria Lamorte's Entre nos (2008), a Co-Production of the Jury Prize at the 2009 Tribeca Festival. In 2011, he managed production in Colombia of the documentary feature film Mama Koka - Die Krieger des Kokainby Suzan Sekersy (Germany, Colombia).
 
In 2013, she was executive producer and participated in the achievement of funds in the development of the feature film La eterna noche de las doce lunas of Priscila Padilla, Award for Best Documentary at the Toulouse Film Festival and selected at several international festivals, including Berlin. In 2014, he premiered the documentary Picó – La máquina musical del Caribe, beneficiary of the FDC 2012 that was part of the Film section in the neighborhoods of the Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival (FICCI- 2015 and the exhibition "Son de cine" of the International Film Festival in Guadalajara 2016.
 
She is also the general producer of Diciembres, a film released in 2018 at the Panama Film Festival which received the Award for Best Human Rights Film at the Istanbul Film Festival 2019. She was co-producer of Río Sucio by Gustavo Fallas, Fondo Fauno Costa Rica award and Ibermedia Co-production Fund 2017, selected at the CRFIC (Costa Rica International Film Festival 2020) and exhibited on the DELEFOCO platform for Costa Rica and Colombia. She is general producer of the documentary feature film 1977 El Tratado (in post-production) by Annie Canavaggio, winner of the Panama Film Fund and the Ibermedia Co-Production Fund 2017 and selected to the Guadalajara Co-Production Meeting. General producer of the documentary, Los nietos del Jazz, winner of DocTV by Panama, premiered in 2018 on public television of the 17 countries of the program and selected at the Latin American Film Festival of Sao Paulo 2019.
 
Throughout her career, she has alternated production with other roles such as being first assistant director of several short films and feature films such as El final de María (1998) and El Periódico (1999) by Jorge Villa, Radio Taxi Santa Fé by William Nuñez (1998), Fragmentos, las imágenes más bellas del cine colombiano  (1999) by Carlos Santa, Bogotá 2016 (2000) by Pablo Mora, Karma (2004) by Orlando Pardo and Amores peligrosos (2010) by Antonio Dorado. She is also co-director with Annie Canavaggio of the documentary feature film En busca del Indio Conejo (in post-production), beneficiary of the Panama Film Fund 2014 and the Ibermedia Co-production Fund.
 
He worked in the field of animation of the video clip Bolero Falaz by Aterciopelados, nominated for Best Music Video on the MTV Channel in 1995. During 1996 she was a graphic reporter in the newspaper El Tiempo, learning about documentary photography with Henry Agudelo and León Darío Peláez, experience that subsequently allowed her to perform for 3 years (1998 – 2001) as an official photographer of the Program of Development and Peace of the Middle Magdalena, portraying one of the areas most affected by the armed conflict, and which was led by Francisco de Roux (Peace Prize in Colombia 2001). In 2006, she also directed the entire sexual and reproductive health campaign for the Magdalena Medio region where she made 3 documentaries that were broadcast in NGOs, municipalities, and public channels in this region. She has also been a jury of the Hayah Short Film Festival (Panama) and the Panama Icarus Festival in 2018.
 
She is currently developing the project El viaje del Kokodrit, a documentary that has been part of the Film Project Development Workshop.
