Pantalla Colombia No.: 143octubre 01 - diciembre 07 / 2025
Three Colombian productions were selected for the 29th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, held from November 7 to 23 in the Estonian capital. The lineup included Una vez en un cuerpo (Once in a Body; Colombia, United States), directed by María Cristina Pérez; Disfonías (Dysphonias), directed by María Camila Pulgarín and Manuela Giraldo; and The Megalomaniacs (Greece, Cyprus, Colombia), directed by Spiros Stathoulopoulos.
Founded in 1997, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival – PÖFF (Pimedate Ööde Film Festival) has grown into one of Northern Europe's most significant film festivals, hosting more than 1,000 industry guests and delegates, along with over 160 journalists. The festival screens approximately 250 feature films and 300 short films from more than 80 countries and attracts an annual audience of around 80,000 attendees. Since 2014, PÖFF has held FIAPF accreditation as an A-category festival, placing it alongside 14 other competitive global festivals, including Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Warsaw, and San Sebastian.
For its latest edition, November 7 to 23 in Estonia's capital, Colombia was represented in the Animated Short Film Competition with Una vez en un cuerpo (Once in a Body; Colombia, United States), directed by María Cristina Pérez. The short had its world premiere earlier this year at the 78th Locarno Film Festival, held in August. It is a production by Pez Dorado Animaciones, co-produced with Cartuna (see Pantalla Colombia 1241).
As she struggles with a strange being living inside her, a woman attempts to reconcile with her sister over an incident from their adolescence. By exploring the experiences they share through their bodies, she confronts the true nature of what inhabits her.
Disfonías (Dysphonias), directed by María Camila Pulgarín and Manuela Giraldo, competed in the New Talents Short Film Competition: Live Action. The film has previously screened at events such as the 15th UNAM International Film Festival (FICUNAM), held between May and June of this year (see Pantalla Colombia 1235), where it was part of the Aciertos Competition: International Film Schools Showcase, representing the University of Medellín. Produced by Lúcida Cine, it was also included in the official selection of the 22nd Vancouver Latin American Film Festival (VLAFF) for its 2024 edition (see Pantalla Colombia 1196).
After the premonition of an unusual bird, a father loses his voice. His daughter sets out to find him again through an intimate narrative that explores memory and the silences of a man who is no longer the same.
Finally, The Megalomaniacs (Greece, Cyprus, Colombia), directed by Greek-Colombian filmmaker Spiros Stathoulopoulos, had its world premiere at the festival. The film is produced by Konstantinos Vassilaros, in co-production with Stelios Kammitsis and José David Corredor. During its development stage, the project was titled Godard sabe la verdad (Godard Knows the Truth) and received support from Colombia's Film Development Fund (FDC) in the Minority Feature Film Co-production category.
According to Cineuropa, the story follows Sofía, a marine archaeologist who embarks on a radical mission to prove that ancient pottery captured sound, etched into its surface like a primitive vinyl record. Before she can analyze the ancient amphorae, she must sculpt replicas for experimentation. Reluctantly, she turns to Potter, her cynical ex-brother-in-law, a failed sculptor lost in wine and resentment toward sound itself, particularly the screeching of his foul-mouthed cockatoo. As egos collide and the narrative drifts into surreal territory, their journey leads to a discovery that transcends centuries.
