Composer and conductor Alejandro Ramírez Rojas was born in Cali, Valle del Cauca province, on August 29, 1976. He began his musical studies in 1995 at the Music School of the Universidad del Valle. In 1999, he moved to Austria to study conducting and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien). In 2001, he studied at the Universidad EAFIT, where he received a Master’s in Music and Conducting. During his studies, he was a student of renowned Italian conductor and clarinetist Francesco Belli.
In 2014, he was nominated for an India Catalina Television Award for his music in the series Comando Élite. He has won Macondo Awards from the Colombian Academy of Film Arts and Sciences: in 2013 for the score of Amores Peligrosos, and in 2012 for the score of the documentary feature Apaporis, in Search of One River by Antonio Dorado Zúñiga. He has been nominated three times for a Macondo, in 2012 and 2010, for the score of Póker and Los Actores del Conflicto (The Actors in the Conflict).
In 2005, he won support from the Bogota Cinematheque in the soundtrack category. In 2008, he was recognized by the Colombian magazine Cambio as one of 25 Colombian leaders, and the Ministry of Culture, in partnership with the British Council, honored him as a Young Colombian Musical Entrepreneur.
His full filmography includes the fiction films Others (2007); The Actors in the Conflict (2008); The Maze Runner (2009); Póker (2010); The 33 (2010); La vida "era" en serio (2011); Jacob (2011); Aluna The Movie (2012); Amores peligrosos (2012); El espejo silencioso (2013); Suave el aliento (2015); El soborno del cielo (2016); La sargento matacho (2016); and Destinos, which opened in Colombian theaters on September 1.
In the documentary genre, Ramírez has participated in Apaporis, in Search of One River (2009); Retratos de la ausencia (2010); Garras de oro: mudo testigo de una injusticia (2011); Los tiempos de Pablo Escobar (2012); Monte adentro (2013); Colombia: Wild Magic(2015); and the historical production A través de la pantalla: canción de vida, muerte y perdón (2015).
He has also created the music for the animated shorts Los ciclos (2008), Los atrapasueños (2009), and Nucuma (2012), as well as the fiction shorts La tarea (2010), Magnolia (2010), 18 (2012), ¿Viste a Cristina el 7 de marzo? (2012), El cohete (2013), and The Trickster Project (2013). In addition, Ramírez created the music for the online video game My web rc (2009); the animated TV series Los Pepa: la familia ideal (2009); the video game Antarctica (2009); the documentary series Los secretos de la montaña sagrada (2010) and Un mundo de Gabo (2013); and the TV series Crónicas de un sueño (2013), Comando élite (2013), El estilista (2014), and La esclava blanca (2016). Finally, he made the music for the Colombian National Theater production of Cinderella (2013).
