Colombia at Clermont-Ferrand

Colombia participated with six shorts at a screening in the industry section and Iván D. Gaonas Outsider in the international competition
From February 5 to 13, the 38th edition of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival was be held in France. Clermont-Ferrand is the world’s largest and most important short film festival and one of the largest festivals in France, with tens of thousands of attendees every year.
The International Competition, now in its 28th year, featured the Colombian film Forastero (Outsider), directed by Iván D. Gaona, the fourth short film in a series by La Banda del Carro Rojo. The shorts were made in southern Santander province and are part of the film Güepsa, historias cortas de Santander, winner of the FDC Feature Film Post-Production award, set to be released in 2016.
Outsider had its world premiere in October 2015 in the Official Competition at the Warsaw Film Festival in Poland. It recounts the story of Leonidas, who used to own a restaurant with his wife, before she left him years ago. One day while he is playing billiards, his only hobby, a town policeman asks him to take in a stranger and give him food. Before long, several deaths in nearby towns will alert Leonidas about his guest.
The screenwriter and director of the short was Iván D. Gaona; the producer was Diana Pérez Mejía; the director of photography was Juan Camilo Paredes; the art director was Juan David Bernal; Andrés Porras was the editor; José Jairo Flórez was on live sound; Augusto Breuchet handled sound design; and the original score was composed by Edson Velandia. The film’s cast was made up of non-professional actors from the southern Santander province, who were trained by the La Banda del Carro Rojo production company for this film and the previous ones. Those actors are: Leonidas Pinzón, Heriberto Palacio, Carlos Garzón, and Cristian Hernández.
In addition to Outsider’s participation in the International Competition, the festival’s industry section was screened six exceptional short films from Colombia, including César Acevedo’s Los pasos del agua, produced by Paola Pérez and César Acevedo; Juan Manuel Betancourt’s Storylines, produced by Gato Encerrado Films; Carlos Osuna’s Puntos cardinales, produced by Juan Mauricio Ruiz; El rapto by Miguel Humberto and José Luis Jiménez Díaz, produced by Carlos Smith; El cañamo, by Rafael Loayza Sánchez, produced by Luis Villegas; and Volver, directed by Iván D. Gaona and produced by Diana Pérez Mejía.
These films was screened as part of the program “Colombian shorts: the new, the best and the fresh,” on Thursday, February 11, at 6 pm at the G. Conchon Theater. Colombia also took part in the Short Film Market held as part of the festival: Proimágenes Colombia was at booth no. 16.
