On October 25, Little Voices, the first Colombian 3D animation film by Jairo Carrillo and Oscar Andrade was awarded an HBO-NALIP Documentary Grant from the National Association of Latino Independent Producers in the United States. And, following its Colombian opening on September 16th with 86 copies in digital 3D theaters throughout the country, the FDC Feature Production stimulus winner will hit French cinemas with a total of 30 copies, thanks to ASC Distribution.
“It’s very important for every filmmaker to premiere on the commercial circuit in any country, and especially in France. You get a very different audience than at film festivals where the number of viewers is limited. That’s the most important thing, getting off the festival circuit, because people get a chance to see the film as it should be seen, and not just on television,” director Jairo Carrillo told PANTALLA COLOMBIA. The French release was secured by the film’s international sales agent Films Boutique, the prestigious German distributors handling some of the most innovative films from around the world including Come As You Are by Geoffrey Enthoven (winner at Montreal), Faust by Alexander Sokurov (in competition at Toronto and Venice) and Best Intentions by Adrian Sitaru (winner at the Locarno Festival). The distributors included Little Voices in their catalogue following the film’s participation in Venice. The feature will also be screened commercially in Spain and Mexico with dates to be confirmed.
Little Voices is based on interviews with and drawings by a generation of displaced children from ages 8 to 13 who grew up amidst the violence and chaos in Colombia. The personal stories of four of the protagonists reveal their views of reality through illustrated and animated versions of their testimony based on original children’s drawings sharing their travels, dreams and hopes.
Prior to its release in Colombia and France the film had a successful run at over 40 festivals worldwide. It won Honorable Mention at the 23rd Human Rights Film Festival in Buenos Aires and a Catalina Award at the 2011 Cartagena Film Festival (FICCI), opened the Vision du Reél Festival, was selected for the 2011 Biarritz Festival, and was screened at the IDFA Festival in Holland, at Hot Docs in Canada, in the Traveling section of the Annecy International Animation Festival, the 2nd Ventana Sur at the Havana Latin American International New Film Festival, the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), the 23rd Rencontres Cinémas D’amérique Latine in Toulouse, BAFIDCI, the 7th Colombia-Barcelona Diaspora Festival and the Latin Beat Festival organized by the Lincoln Center Film Association in New York City.
