The VLAFF is a non-profit cultural organization striving to entertain audiences, provide information on Latin American social issues and celebrate the rich traditions of the diverse Latin American countries. Since 2003, it has given audiences a chance to experience Latin American films in Vancouver, presenting a forum for the promotion and exhibition of Latin American cinema that provides independent filmmakers with an opportunity to present their work and network, creating artistic alliances between the Canadian and Latin American film industries.

Festival promoters celebrate "the major changes experienced recently by the Colombian film industry, including a record 18 Colombian film releases in 2011, more than double the number in the last five years and more than triple the number in the last eight years. From 2000-2010, an average of eight Colombian films were released annually," another a good reason to screen the latest releases as proof of this beauty and diversity.

Juan Andrés Arango's feature film, La Playa D.C. (2012), will open the festival and compete in the First Film category alongside Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza's Chocó (2012). The Al Jazeera Documentary Competition welcomes Patricia Ayala Ruiz's Don Ca; Iván D. Gaona's Los Retratos (2012) will compete in the Short Film category and Iván Wild's Edificio Royal (2013) will screen in the Latin American Panorama category along with William Vega's La Sirga (2012) and Ciro Guerra's Los viajes del viento (2009).

The BOGOSHORTS World Tour will also present a selection of short films from the Bogota Short Film Festival, an event that brings retrospectives and exhibitions of Colombian short films to major film events around the world. This exhibition includes Franco Lolli's Rodri  (2012), Jesús Reyes Hoyos Tierra escarlata (2013) and Nicolas Serrano's Río (2012).

Three Colombians will also participate as judges: Ciro Guerra will sit on the First Film jury, Jhonny Hendrix will judge the Al Jazeera Documentary Competition, and Cristina Gallego (Los viajes del viento, Edificio Royal) is among the Short Film Competition judges.
