8th Diaspora without Borders 2011 Awareness Conference Closes

From October 7-23, and for the 8th year in a row, the 2011 Diaspora without Borders: Colombia-Barcelona Awareness Conference took place offering a series of events organized by Asociación Imago who through the use of visual arts and new technologies analyze and seek to create awareness about Colombian reality. The biggest innovation this year was the presence of guest country Brazil and their introduction to one of the conference’s central themes this year: environmental protection.

The biggest innovation this year was the presence of guest country Brazil and their introduction to one of the conference’s central themes this year: environmental protection.
 
This year’s program featured nine films including The Colors of the Mountain (Los colores de la montaña) by director Carlos César Arbeláez, Rage (Rabia) by Sebastián Cordero, Karen Cries on a Bus (Karen llora en un bus) by Gabriel Rojas Vera, Stoplight Society (La sociedad del semáforo) by Rubén Mendoza and All Your Dead Ones (Todos tus muertos) by Carlos Moreno. The Diaspora Conference also included a special screening of the animated feature Little Voices (Pequeñas voces) by Jairo Carrillo and Oscar Andrade.
 
The Conference extended this year’s documentary program to more than 30 documentaries in the “Without Borders” selection including We feed the World and Janadesh: People's Verdict. Other projects were also presented including Cruïlla Comú, El Parlante’s Colombian initiative in Catalan; a selection of films from Fundación Orientación Ecológica’s SURrealidades Environmental and Human Rights Film Festival; and the international project, La Lleva, a reality show in which children present their country to children in other countries. The 8th Diaspora also screened a selection of documentaries titled La Muestra de Muestras with a series of internationally exhibited films put together in Catalunya.
 
And, for the third consecutive year, the Bogotá International Documentary Exhibit participated in the conference, bestowing for the 2nd year in a row the Imago Award designed to promote distribution of documentaries which Imago considers in line with their mission based on a film’s social content and form. This year’s winner was Yo tengo ya la casita by René Palomino and Nicolás Guarín and the selection included titles such as Los demonios sueltos by Marta Hincapié Uribe, Versalles, los pasos perdidos by Jhoan García and Luis Hernández, Uno: la historia de un gol by Carlos Moreno and Gerardo Muyshondt, Las rutas del yagé by Alex Andrés López, Mamá Chocó by Diana Kuellar, Pescador de lunas by Christian Bitar and Miguel León Durán, and Cerrando heridas by Álvaro Serje Tuirán.
 
The short film program included a special section dedicated to Rubén Mendoza’s shorts, El corazón de la mancha, El reino animal and La casa por la ventana. And an animation program featured La bolita de colores by Natalia Ortiz Ferro, DUH (Diario del último hombre) by Jorge Caballero, Dr. W by Muyi Neira, A Man Alone with Himself by Eliana Hoyos and Jordi Glez and Migrópolis by Karolina Villarraga. A selection of the best films from the In Vitro Visual screenings was also on hand with titles such as Chimbumbe by Antonio Coello, Alijuna by Cristina Escoda, Deixe-me assim que puder by Julia Caiuby, Dos golpes by María Teresa Salcedo, La tarea by Biviana Márquez, En brazos de Morfeo by Juan Gabriel Pérez Arjona, Antonia by Ernesto Lozano, Leave Not a Cloud Behind and Esto es un revólver by Pablo González, By Night by Juan Díaz, Cincuenta by Manuela Montoya, Lunes by Luís Fernando Villa, Cuando llegan los muchachos by Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza, Los zapatos amarillos by Diego Navarro, A los 15 uno ya es grande - Festival Rock Al Parque 1994 – 2009 by Klych López and eight music videos.
